Kam Work in Progress Reference Video

Post an aesthetic video that reflects the vibe of Gibby's group
GIBBY HEATHER AND CONNOR!!! Your work-in-progress performance made me think of this video because of the way that Connor and Heather worked together to create the first theme with the vibraphone and the synth in the beginning of your piece. The bowing and occasional low sounds added on the vibraphone and gongs in this video reminded me of textures Gibby created with his DIY mystery instrument. Also, I noticed and appreciated Connor's mallet choices, which are just as important in this video because of the dynamic range needed here. I REALLY LOVED YOUR PIECE AND CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW IT EVOLVES!!!

kam week 4 videos

example 1)

thought 1)
the bass in this song is super prevalent throughout, and the way that the drummer and bassist communicate in the last chorus reminded me of nick the way nick and I have been playing.

example 2)

thought 2)
I chose this song specifically for the drum part. I think that this is the kind of beat I anticipate using for our next section. I want to find the same balance in dynamic range as this drummer so that max's cello will be impactful like the piano is in this track.

example 3)

thought 3) lastly the mandolin in the intro of this song has some of the same qualities as the bass loop that nick built for our performance. I would love to experiment some ways to match the timbre here because I think it would make it even more interesting coming from the high register of a bass. As our group has been working on shaping the sounds we use, particularly in the drums, I could see this being something we add soon.

Noah Safian - Week 7 Videos

This is a pretty cool video exploring the use of contact microphones. I don't have much experience with these pieces of hardware but I find them very intriguing and I think that further incorporation of contact mic'd sound could be really cool in your composition.

In relation to your incorporation of nature, growth, and time in your piece, I think this could be a really awesome phenomena to explore. This thing called the "MIDI Sprout" gives plants a voice, allowing you to listen to a plant play harmonious sounds in order to "experience the way patterns and melodies change in relationship to fluctuations in your environment".

Week 4 Videos

I think this video is super cool because it shows someone mixing granular synthesis with acoustic drums. We have both of those things going in our set but we haven't tried them together and I think that it could be really cool.

I was looking for a video that had a bass player and a synth player with looping and came across this guy who did both at the same time.  I've always loved playing synth but do not have much experience with looping and I'm excited to keep working on it.

For the last video I just wanted to find someone who absolutely killed looping in ableton. This guy definitely did.

Gibby W7: Inspiration

This video may not be new, but I think it's a nice point of reference for a slower groove and good example of clear looping. Of course, it's easy to tell what all loops are happening because this is a solo performance, which has made me think about the concept of walking away from your setup. If the idea is to show how time is cyclical and how everything will always happen and keep happening, it might be cool to show off your loops by simply walking away from the set-up and letting it run.

I was searching for process based music to get some inspiration after your performance and I think this piece is really intriguing. I think when we think about an additive process, especially in the genre you've chosen, it's additive in terms of instrumentation e.g. looping the bass, then the drums come in, then the piano comes in, etc. While it doesn't necessarily fit into your aesthetic, I think this piece is interesting because it begins with its "groove" already fully formed and follows the process of changing the melodic fragment and shifting the harmony. This piece also shows the importance of repetition in process music.

Nick Warren; Week 7

As I was listening to Gibby, Heather, and Connor's work-in-progress, my mind kind of immediately jumped to the first track of Eno's Ambient 1. It uses piano in a very similar way, and, even though it is using a vibraphone, it does contain textures that are similar to what Connor and Gibby were each doing. I don't know if you all took inspiration from Eno or this piece directly, but it seemed to have called upon his work in a really beautiful way.

I was looking around for nature-based time lapse videos while I was listening to the Eno track, just to get a better sense of how this ambience would affect the mood of a video similar to the one you had said is in the works. Switch between the music in this video and the Eno piece behind the video, and you'll see how it drastically changes the mood of the video.

Blog Week 7

For each the other group:

Post at least 2 aesthetic reference points (audio, video, website) to what the group has presented. It can relate to their work-in-progress from any direction or dimension: a literary relationship, a textural/sonic "vibe", a related form, similar uses of technology, or something more obscure.

For each reference, be sure to identify what group's work it is relevant to, and why.

Consider: "Your work-in-progress made me think of ________ because _______."

Heather Week 4 Videos

This is a duet for marimba and vibraphone that has a lot of really great ideas and sounds that are relevant to what we've talked about. This video is of music created through motion capture - while it's a lot more movement than I think we're planning on, it's still a great example of how motion capture can work with sound. This shows how music and visuals can combine, particularly how the movement in the visuals often mimics or reflects the music.

Gibby W4: 3 Videos

1. This is a live performance by an artist I enjoy where they've projected the members of the orchestra on floating panels, similar to an idea we discussed.

2. This is a duet for piano and vibraphone by a composer I'm familiar with. I like the lyrical vibraphone parts over the consistent piano chords. It's and aesthetic we may be able to take inspiration from.

3. This is a fantastic video I found using motion capture to manipulate audio with the main subject being a goldfish. While this video is ironically funny, I think it also displays the different kinds of parameters that can be manipulated with movement.
