River Movement Ideas

As part of the "opening scene" group, we work closely with the "Voice of the River" group.  Our group has been focusing a lot on how the river puppet will first appear, and what sound effects should be used with it.  I personally am very interested in composing a piece that would mirror the movement of the river itself (both as it's moving in the performance, and in the general sense of how a river moves).  I really liked Mac's post on the choir piece that imitated water (from the first week) and plan to use it as inspiration.  Some ideas for our composition were:

  • different voices simultaneously playing in different meters to imitate the movement of the waves
  • different voices looping melodies at different times, imitating the cycle of a water droplet (for this, I was hoping to have it be un-noticeable that the voices are repeating)
  • the melodies generally would have constant rising and falling motions, like waves
  • sounds of nature in the background of the piece, potentially processing some of these sounds enough to make a melody out of them (either as a process as the piece progresses, or right at the start)
  • an overall very peaceful, ambient composition
Rachel had the idea too, to use phasing as a means to imitate waves.  Her example was the well-known Steve Reich composition "Piano Phase."

If you guys have any other ideas, feel free to post below!
