Blog post #1

As a jazz pianist and producer, a youtube musician that has been really inspiring to me recently is Anomalie.  In his videos, he combines live performance on keyboard and synth, and plays over a beat that he alters throughout the performance.  There is also a huge element of improvisation, which is something that I've been implementing in a lot of my compositions lately, as a great moment of improv is something I believe should be captured and utilized.

For a collaboration in this class I am very open to try new things and experiment.  This video of Radiohead performing Bloom live is definitely something that interests me, and loosely embodies something I would want to create in a collaboration.  I'm definitely very interested in combining elements of songwriting and live instrumental performance with electronic music elements, live manipulation of sound, instrument design, and improvisation.

  1. WOW that first video was smooth! I really liked the tonalities they used and their looping techniques. It was a really cool mixture of styles.

I'm a big Radiohead fan too, but admittedly, I haven't given the King of Limbs as much of a listen. I still am familiar with this track, and really like what they bring to the table live. It's very cool to see how they insert technology in their pieces.

  3. Daaaang, those are some creamy keys. But seriously, I enjoyed the improvisational element in this piece a lot, and I also appreciate what seemed to be pre-determined alterations to the original beat. Cool vid!

I love watching Thom Yorke do his thing in a live session, he's got a way of making repeated major 2nds on a guitar look mind-bendingly cool. I also like how varied the instrumentation is for the percussion alone. I'm a drummer, so I'm always interested to see the behind-the scenes look at the percussion (esp. for a radiohead track).

  4. OOh this is such a bop. I am grooving right now. I'd definitely like to have improv elements in whatever my group puts together.

I really liked watching the drummer switch between electronic and acoustic drums. Radiohead's live performances are always really engaging.

  5. ahhhhhhh that first video slaps. Wow.
Such a fat pocket. Such good sounds. mmmmm
Radiohead is one of those bands that I still have no idea why I haven't gotten more into. All of my other musical tastes and premonitions read as 'You would be a huge Radiohead fan' and I've been told that by other people a number of times. This track is really nice. I've never seen a video of their live performance before. I'll spend more time with this.
