Kam's first blog post

heres my first video - I chose thins one because i think it best represents the sort of music that I like to write, as well as my love for drumming.

and my second one - I chose this video because I love the way that Merrill uses her loop in and out of the song. Each member of her group is on the same page about where they are in the song based on the loop, and everyone is expressing the same level of energy as Merrill, which is one of the most important things to me when I'm playing with a group.

  1. I love the energy and call-and-response aspect of tUnE-yArDs performance. The musical interaction between performers definitely adds to the charm of their performance. Also, I think call-and-response between percussion instruments sounds awesome and could be a cool thing to explore in your experiment

  2. Both of these are really high energy and showcase some awesome work with rhythm. I liked how you interacted with the track in your solo clip. Tune yards was super groovy, i really enjoyed how they built the track live and the way each layer blended well. They are also very tight timing wise.

  3. Your drumming is so good! I love that piece. Rhythm is obviously super key to your taste and I think the creative possibilities are wide open for something super groovy.

  4. I've never seen anything like the tUnE-yArDs performance because I have never been that into drumming videos but it is so cool! I also can't wait to see what you have in store for this semester because your drumming during songwriting last semester was amazing.

  5. Your drumming is amazing! I always struggle with composing for percussion instruments, so both these videos were so instructive for me. And I agree, I love how everyone in the tUnE-yArDs video is on the same page with their energy level and engagement with the piece - the performance is already amazing, but that makes it even more fun to watch.

  6. Seriously your drum chops are really tasty. I know you're into looping, and that fits really well with your drumming. There's a video of Adam Neely on a YouTube channel called Scott's Bass Lessons where he talks about using drum triggers to trigger certain synth loops/licks when his drummer plays certain drums. It would be really cool if you could figure out how to do that or something similar to get a synth loop to "interact" with your drumming.

  7. Such tight timing! I'd love to hear a studio mix of your video. We get a glimpse of how the electronic rhythms and your live drumming interact; it'd be amazing to hear it more carefully mixed. I've been on the fence about Tune-Yards for some time. Some performances I'll see I think it's a bit gimmicky and one-trick pony. Others I think are so richly layered, with carefully considered syncopations and really seamless technological integration. In the end, they have a strong aesthetic identity, and a clear musical voice. Much to admire.
