Heather Schmidt, Week 1

This is a piece of mine, combining piano with ambient electronic sounds, that is pretty reflective of my work. I like to play with the interaction between acoustic and electronics instruments, particularly with a cinematic/soundscape focus.

The video below is a similar concept, but adds more instrumentation and complex rhythms, which is something that I have been interested in doing. I would also love to use prepared piano, but couldn't find a video that I liked that showed a collaboration using prepared piano, electronics, and additional instruments.

  1. I like the ambient, cinematic soundscape you created in "Apart". I think the incorporation of prepared piano would definitely add an unique and intriguing element to the live performance of one of these pieces.

  2. Wow Heather. This is so so dope. I love how you went all over the piano in this piece, I feel like its really hard for me to make this kind of music because I end up getting stuck in one place musically. Props for the way you mixed this as well. The low rumbling sound never interferes with the instruments in the higher range. The ending is super satisfying also :) I can definitely hear the influence from the other video you put in here.

  3. I really enjoyed the pacing of your piece. Everything is layered really well and the piece develops smoothly. exactly what I want from ambient work. I have played the second piece but we did it as an arrangement for percussion and amplified harp. I enjoy the connection between electronic and acoustic instruments.

  4. I'm a big fan of this electro-acoustic texture, it's surreal and dream-like. I'm curious about how you want to present this music. Would you want to perform a fully composed piece or would this be somewhat improvised?

  5. I really like how the piano blends so well with the ambiance in your piece. The video also shows how just a pianist and a percussionist can create something really awesome and I think it's a great example for the class.

  6. There are some really nice sounds in your piece. As someone who isn't particularly interested by ambient-style music, I think it would be really cool to combine the textures of your piece with some grooves and rhythms as in the second video.

  7. Your composition is wonderful. It is so well paced, and the electronic and acoustic piano sounds have a nice interplay.
