Nick Warren; Week 1

This is a (sideways) phone video of a tune I wrote for the electronic hip-hop/jazz jam band I'm in with a few friends. We don't really have the chance to play very much, so we don't really gig around. However, this is definitely a pretty typical vibe I go for when I write tunes.

I would really like the opportunity to work with some modular gear. It is the perfect representation of how I think of music performance as an interaction– in this case between man and machine. It would be cool for me to be able to use something like a modular setup to do live processing of signal someone else is creating. One thing this video doesn't show that I would like to do with this performance is utilize some of the surround capabilities of the Davis studio.

  1. Groovy jam in the first vid. I like the contrast between the band stuff you're used to doing and the incorporation of modular gear you'd like to experiment with. I too am super interested in different analogue gear, particularly that which would interpret sound to generate an image (like an oscilloscope)

  2. your choice of synth is always spot on. I could listen to this for so long. I love the bass line ideas that show up here and there as you're playing synth. It's so cool how much sliding there is between notes. The beat is phat as usual, you guys were in the pocket for sure. As far as using modular machines, I'm looking forward to how you two with incorporate this into your music in the future.

  3. Great energy in the first one, you all are really tight. It is clear nobody is trying to show off or play over top of one another. I love the modular video. those things are a mystery to me but I have enjoyed them every time I hear them. I like the idea of using surround sound in Davis.

  4. Anything that I could say about the first clip was already expressed by Elijah's constant head bopping: nice. I think that kind of generative or sequenced (or both?) kind of idea would be really complex but if anyone could figure it out it is you. If you could pull off getting your sounds to float through Davis it would be a spectacle that I'd love to see happen.

  5. Really cool beat in the first one. The synth fit the pocket perfectly and you definitely felt the grove. I've also been extremely interested in modular gear ever since becoming a big fan of Deadmau5. It creates that spacey ambient vibe that I love.

  6. Amazing synth timbres in both examples. 'Pocket' might be a good term to dissect for week 1. I think it's fascinating because it's so relative. Something about it changes when the sound source (sequenced, live drums, e-drums) changes -- we adapt as listeners and performers.

The modular example is amazing because although the sources are probably analog (don't forget modular doesn't necessarily equal analog--lots of modules actually have digital processors in them), there is a very contemporary digital / glitch aesthetic to it.
