In my first audio/video it is me playing the prelude from Bach Cello Suite V in C minor. I used one of the bathrooms in the SMTD to play around with acoustics and was able learn more about my intonation tendencies. Hope you enjoy some Bach!
In this next video, you will see Claire Chase. She is the founder of the International Contemporary Ensemble and the first flutist to ever be a Fellow with the MacArthur Foundation. Here she is performing the cadenza from "Descent from Parnassus" by Marcos Balter. I find using vocalization (speaking, whispering, yelling, or screaming) to be so effective in music.
The piece with Claire Chase is astonishing! Probably one of the most powerful short solo performances I've ever seen. Her multifarious and rapid technique ranging from vocal to flute experimentation—often all at once—and obvious dedication and passion for the craft make this a very evocative performance.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't get the first one to work unfortunately. That second one is really amazing, though. With her combination of words and singing and flute she can be ultimately expressive. She really takes advantage of the range that that combination provides.
ReplyDeleteWow, I loved the solo flute performance! I have never seen someone play flute using these techniques, and I am in awe. Very expressive and artistic. Will be sharing with some of my flute friends to see why they play with such mediocre techniques.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't see the first video, but I love all of the amazing sounds, colors, and textures flute offers. So cool, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThe use of the extended techniques in the flute piece is so so cool. I usually don't love solo flute pieces, but she really pushes the instrument to the far ends of what it can do. Really spectacular.
ReplyDeleteClaire Chase is a true genius! She does a fantastic job of conveying to the audience the depth of detail that Marcos Balter notates within his scores.
