Week 1 - Blog Assignment

Week 1 - Blog Assignment

This is the audio for a track I released last semester, and is a good representation of the style of music I write and produce.

This is a video of a pop track that had a dance choreographed to it. I think it could be really cool to produce a track in collaboration with dance students but backwards - write the dance first, and then produce the track in response to it somehow.

  1. I really like the idea of writing music to dance, as I'm not sure I've ever seen that done before. Traditionally the movement is reactive to the music, and doing the process backward might inspire novel musical gestures and sounds.

  2. I love the idea of turning the creative process and collaboration on its head! I think that's something that would be interesting to explore in relation to VR. I'm thinking about the video Joey posted and imagining that motion being the primary audio/source that is used as a basis to build off of.

  3. I've been thinking about ways that dance can influence a live-action or recorded score, so I love your visions! I just saw you play at Canterbury House this weekend and you were lovely!

I love watching those style videos! It's cool to see a direct relationship between music and dance, and it would probably be cool to scew that direct relationship.

  4. April has bops only, I love it. I think we could have the opportunity to create an interesting mash of dance and pop as well as electronics this semester. Could be a super interesting and innovative way to vary the moods for each of the pieces we work on in class.

  5. Your music is so professional and pleasant on the ears. Those two things are not something that I'm well versed in but can very much still appreciate.

  6. While I am similarly not well-versed in this style of music, I appreciate the choreography and quality of the music in these videos. Very clean

  7. I really liked the track of yours you shared! It had a nice laid back feel and almost a "summery air", if you will. I felt the lyrics and the musical texture were just right for each other.

Your idea about composing music in response to dance/movement instead of the other way around really resonates with me. It is like we are thinking of movement as music. It prompted me to think about how music can be something beyond just an aural experience.

  8. I like the phrase "writing a dance." I don't normally think about movement as words, but it's an interesting image and way to approach the composition of music & dance.

  9. I really love your music, its so smooth and warm and everything sounds so clean and melodic. I have not worked with recording in so long and your music is really refreshing.
Also I just thought about this but I'm wondering what you could do if you could used mocap system to play a part of a song with dancers and that way you could create a song that was, in a way, made from the dancing?

  10. I really enjoyed listening to your original song. The mixing of the guitar and keyboards is warm and balanced, leaving room for your voice to tell the story. The concept of composing based on dance is really interesting to me as well. Since movement is something I often forget about in my own music, it would be cool to make something in response to a different source of inspiration.

  11. The production on your track is so clean and it really highlights how lovely your vocals and instrumental are! I think the collaboration of dance and music is so important and love the exploration that working together creates.

  12. Your song as a wonderful, lush, warm feel and texture, and the vocals are spot on for this style. It makes me think of how pop music has functioned as protest music in the past. It's a nice thought experiment to think of how you could wrap some scathing social commentary in a fun pop tune like this. Artists certainly have and continue to do this.
