Winter 2020: Protest Music

This semester's theme is PROTEST MUSIC.

We will consider this prompt broadly: performance work in which the artists take an explicitly activist stance on one or more contemporary issues. Participants in the class this semester will devise performances that respond to this theme, presented in a concert on Friday April 10. Performances can be new, original works, or arrangements or reworkings of pieces from the repertoire.

Some Food for Thought:

Nina Simone – Mississippi Goddam (1964)

Steve Reich – Come Out (1966); Choreography by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker (1982)

Thomas dgx yhl – Glory to Hong Kong (2019), performed by the Black Blorchestra.

Diamanda Galás – This is the Law of the Plague (1986/1991), from Plague Mass

Helado Negro – It's My Brown Skin (2016)

Matthew Burtner – Sound Cast of Matanuska Glacier (2015)
