Week 1- Hannah Marcus

These are snippets of an improvisation I did last year with a percussionist and harpist- collaborators with whom I frequently work. The textural play between sound and body is important to me.

The main thing I'm drawn to inside of this work is the relationship between viewer and performer, as well as how space is filled and isolated by sound, visual design, and emotional rigor. I'd love to be involved in something that overlays language/text with electronic (or not) sound and then brings about a clear physicality within the body.

  1. It's super interesting to see how you interpret sounds as movement, reflecting shorter sounds with more quick-stopping movements. I would love to see that relationship flipped on its head too to see how sound would arise from movement.

I love the visuals in Chunky Move. I'm so interested in seeing how space influences how we view a piece, and in this case too how a space within a space affects it further (frames within frames!). Also, the relationship between movement and light in this is incredibly well done. It's also set up in a beautiful way.

  2. I'm excited to have dancers in this class, as I think dance and sound are linked in a very natural and intuitive way. I like the idea of the performance space and the audience affecting the sound and movement of the work.

  3. I love how many mediums you're using- improvisation, speaking, movement, and music. I love your thoughts about the role of the audience and the relationship between the performer and the audience and the art of interacting with the people receiving your work.

I would also love to work with physicality in regards to dancing but also in its relationship with sound- how we can create an active relationship in real-time to instigate new feelings in who's watching.

  4. I think spoken word in tandem with dance would evoke a really interesting experience especially with electronic processing. I was thinking it could be interesting to have a dancer perform some movements, then the speaker could say a phrase or sentence that evokes the movement, and then the electronics could be used or modified to mimic the movements of the dancer, and thus close an interpretation feedback loop.

  5. I thought both pieces here were very intense. I enjoyed the improvisational elements of your piece and the grating, deep timbres it moved toward as it went. Additionally, the interplay between the narration and the movement both clashed and came together in satisfying ways at various parts - I enjoyed them not being perfectly in line with each other. The second piece from the trailer, seemed very strong and emotionally resonant. I especially enjoyed the quick, chaotic movement in flashing light.

  6. An aspect of both examples you gave I was drawn to was framing and composition of the filming. The low still perspective of your improvisation was one which would be rather impractical for a live audience member to experience. I felt it highlighted the grounded feeling of the physical movement.

In the second example, I imagine why you are so interested in the relationship of viewer and performer. There were so many layers of perspective! Is the video itself the piece, or was it merely a cinematographic summary of one? What was most interesting to me was how removed I felt. I was not only divided from the performers in the space, but I seemed to be removed even from the audience, which I suppose in this context could be interpreted as part of the performance.

  7. I love how some of your movements directly mimic real life objects. That is such an interest direction to take dance in. I also enjoy how I can see your movements react with the words being spoken.

  8. I have never worked with choreography directly before, so I am thrilled to have a chance to work with a dancer and utilize body movements to add another dimension to a piece. I'm primarily an electronic music producer, and having a visual component such as dancing, or even creating an extended digital visual experience with sensors attached to a dancer would be really engaging.

  9. The second video captivated me so much. I think the way the sound assists the sharp movement of the performers was done in such a strong and powerful way, and this is similar to something I would like to achieve in the class too.

  10. The guided score with improvisation created an intense impact. I love how things came together and then distanced themselves through the entire work.

  11. My goodness, that Chunky Move piece is incredible. What a fascinating way to stage and present a dance. One of my main interests is looking at how we can use technology to create new/different relationships between performers and audiences. I'd love to know more about what the audience experience of this piece was like.
