Blog 1 - Kate Derringer

I have been delving into combining live instrumental performance with live electronics. I have a lot of respect for Shigeto, as he integrates drums and electronic music together so seamlessly. I observe his performances and take mental notes about how I can improve my performances.

Lately, I have been getting really into Detroit techno and I would like to incorporate some elements of that into a performance in combination with live instruments. I would also like to experiment with interactive visuals through jitter or the like.

  1. I'm still in awe that Shigeto gave a presentation at PAT seminar last year... I haven't seen this KEXP session, but after watching it, this might be one of my favorite that they've done. It's really cool to see his live drumming too, and how he incorporates that into his playing. I remember you did something similar to that with vocals and electric bass at the Resonance concert, and I really enjoyed that!

I need to get more into the Detroit Techno scene. I know that Detroit is an amazing place for the genre, I should really take advantage of it sometime or something. This mix is really cool though, I'm definitely gonna have this on loop in my room for a while.

  2. Shigeto! I really admire his performance style and work ethic. His presentation in the Davis Center last year was incredibly inspiring. I went home and immediately started trying to replicate his awesome latin grooves on my drumset. I also like how cleanly he integrates the electronic and acoustic elements.

Techno is some of the most entrancing music to listen to in a live setting. I've been to a few great techno shows in Detroit and I love them because this music just pulls the part of you that wants to dance right out into the open along with everyone else.

  3. LOVE Shigeto. Mixing electronic and acoustic performance is also something I've been very interested in for a while. Though much more towards the ambient side of things I did a couple pieces along those lines at the end of last semester, could be really fun to try more.
Also please send me more Detroit Techno. I've always been so on the edge of being aware of it and want to fix that. Thx.
