Blog Post Assignment #1

DISCLAIMER: This video is like 1/2 an hour long, but you'll get the gist of it if you watch like 5 minutes. This type of a collaboration interests me a lot because many aspects of it are improvisational (Nicolas Jaar's manipulation of various parameter's on the electronic side of the performance) but the overall structure is predetermined. I would enjoy being on either side of this duo, working with Ableton or playing the guitar--Though I have far less experience with live electronic music than I do with guitar-playing.

[I wasn't able to upload this video to the blog--it was too large, but if you paste the above link into your browser, you should be able to see it. Let me know if you aren't able to view it. This isn't the actual video for the song, I just slapped one of my photos in imovie and bounced the sound file in so it would appear in video format..perhaps there was a better way to go about doing this...]

ANYWAY, this is an unfinished song I'm working on right now tentatively titled "Comin' Back Down". On it, I perform drums, guitar, bass guitar, and vocals. I'm into a lot of psychedelic rock and funk/r&b music and it seems to show through a bit in this clip--hope you like it!

  1. I really enjoyed your song! Had a really nice groove to it, and the drums especially sounded great. Where did you get the visuals, did you make them yourself?

    1. I'm glad you enjoyed the track, Ben! The visual for the video is a picture that I took from an airplane while I was flying to Costa Rica a few years ago. I love the look of the islands and the color/texture of the water :)

  2. A friend of mine showed me Nicolas Jaar's album, "Space is Only Noise," awhile back and I was really into it for a minute, but ended up forgetting about it until now. I was not aware that he was in any other groups but this is an amazing performance and I would enjoy exploring this type of collaboration as well.

Also, this song is super funky. Did you record and mix it yourself as well?

    1. Thanks Kate! Yes I recorded and mixed this track with a lot of overdubbing. Also, "Space is Only Noise" is one of my favorite albums! I especially the tracks "Problems with the Sun", "Specters of the Future", and the title track.

  3. Nicolas Jaar is incredible. I still distinctly remember listening to Sirens for the first time coming home from work, at the Rackham blue bus stop and just being *floored*. Haven't heard this set before. I'll have to check the full thing out sometime soon, really liked what I listened to.
And the psychadelic aesthetic is fantastic, song is super groovy. Would love to hear the finished product once its out!

  4. Dang, I went into that first song thinking it was gonna be a super ambient soundscape, but when that beat kicked in, I was definitely surprised... in a good way! I'm gonna have to go through and listen to this whole thing sometime, I really want to experiment in a style like this.

Also your song sounds great! I'm a huge fan of the sound you get on guitar. I know it's unfinished, but I think it would be super cool if you were able to expand the intro and possibly dive more into that psychedelic ambience.

    1. Thanks, Ryan! I definitely plan to explore some warping effects on the guitar and hope to create a cool sonic environment along the way :) The first song from the Darkside DJ set is called "Paper Trails" and it's one of my favorites. I'd definitely check out their album "Psychic" if you enjoyed the sounds in the boiler room set!

  5. Was really digging your song man! The space of sound you created was really distinct, and the melody and lyrics meshed really well with that.
