Blog Week 1

One really great aspect of going to the school of music is being surrounded all these talented musicians. Upon entering the school I immediately found myself in multiple groups. It wasn't until my sophomore year did I find myself creating a group (Eight Carl) that affiliates with one the most musical fulfilling genres: math rock. This band consists only of Geoff Brown and I. Here's an early recording of us jamming out in the Duderstadt Audio Studio.

This band is a serious icon for how I wanna progress musically. They are primarily a three piece that consists of guitar, saxophone and drums. They are a rather experimental ensemble that masterfully combines trance music with math rock and prog rock. They involve lots of repetition, beautiful melodies, and speed metal drumming to create a completely unique sound. I wanted to model after their musical perseverance and inventiveness.

  1. Dang Joe you can play those drums fast!!! I love how locked you and Geoff are in your duo. As for the Zs track, I think you are definitely on your way, just need to add in a horn who can keep up with you two.

  2. It's so amazing watching you and Geoff perform together, I'm sure your practice sessions can get pretty crazy in order to get all that synchronization. The textures between these two pieces are certainly very different but the structures used resemble each other, I think it may be cool to mess around with more instruments and experiment with creating different soundscapes.

  3. It's so impressive how tight and locked in you two are through the rhythmic changes. It all feels very seamless.
