Part 1: Personal Project - Golden Apples of the Sun

This was a project that I created for my intro PAT class last semester. It includes found sound, acoustic (brass, woodwind, string) instruments, MIDI keyboard, trigger pads, and spoken word all processed via Logic. I have a research interest in musical code switching and this project made me 'switch' between modes constantly. It was an enjoyable challenge that opened my eyes (and ears) to new possibilities. I hope to improve and expand on the skills acquired via collaborative endeavors in our chamber ensembles.

I am intrigued by the juxtaposition of the acoustic strings playing from sheet music and the electronic music artist seemingly improvising with them. It combines two streams of my life, that of the classically trained horn player who became a public school music teacher and the improvising 'rock' keyboardist who gigged on the weekends. Perhaps now a third stream - the neophyte 'technologist' who has begun dabbling earnestly with the accoutrement and language of electronic music. Bringing these worlds together the formal-informal-classical-vernacular-intepretive-improvised fills me with great wonder and I am looking forward to the journey of learning and contributing to these types of contexts.
